Find out who we are and what we do
Amicii Dog Rescue is a UK based charity, which was established to support a dog rescue shelter in Transylvania, Western Romania. The shelter cares for up to 200 dogs at any one time and is run by Asociatia Amicii Nostri, a registered NGO.
The dogs that live at the shelter have come mainly from the streets of the towns of Viișoara, Câmpia Turzii and Turda. Some dogs are abandoned at the shelter, for example they have been thrown over the fence. Others have been abandoned by their owners and taken into the care of the shelter team, whilst some are taken from the state public shelter in Turda.
The shelter was founded and is run by Dora Fodor a highly dedicated school teacher. Dora and her small team look after the dogs 365 days of the year.
Amicii Dog Rescue also has a team of volunteers in the UK, who work tirelessly to raise funds and to rehome as many of the dogs as possible. In 2014/2015, over 250 dogs were successfully rehomed in the UK, including a few to Germany and 3 to Holland. The charity also runs a ‘spay and neuter’ programme for the dogs of Romania, funded by generous donations.
The current rescue shelter is situated on a piece of rented land, with a large damp barn attached. The shelter remains very much at risk, with the owner constantly threatening to evict the shelter dogs back to the streets. During 2017, we are working to raise money to build a new shelter for the Association, on a piece of land that will be owned by the charity and which will give it a long-term future.

A pleasure to deal with!
I would also like to let you know that you have been a pleasure to deal with. We were a little bit worried about adopting a dog from abroad as there are so many dogs in the UK that already need looking after, but you have made the process most pleasurable – we were beginning to wonder if the ‘big boys’ were even interested in re-homing dogs just by the way that we have been spoken to.
High standard of work!
I took Lenny for a general vet check-up & the vet thought the standard of his passport was amongst the best she’d seen. With all the necessary vaccinations, worming, flea treatments & even a blood test for heart worm. The vet came from Italy and said she has seen many sub-standard entries in passports putting the dog/other dogs at risk. She also thought Lenny was in excellent health too – he is now 28kg and full of life.
I thought I’d pass this on because the high standard of your work is being recognised.
Put me at ease!
Initially I was nervous about the idea of adopting a dog from overseas that we hadn’t had the chance to meet. But the whole adoption process, from initial discussions on the phone, to our very thorough home check, put me at ease and reassured me that Amicii had the best interests of us, and more importantly, Charlie at heart and gave me the confidence that we were a good match for each other. All the arrangements including paperwork, transportation etc were handled very professionally. Despite a terrible start in life Charlie has amazed us with the way he has settled in to our home. He is an absolute joy and we can’t imagine life without him now. If we were ever looking for another dog to join our family I would look no further than Amicii. The work they do is amazing and I’d recommend them without hesitation.
A lovely experience!
My experience of adopting from Amicii in Romainia has been nothing but a lovely experience and I have made many friends through the rescue. My story began with seeing the piccys of the dogs and I got in touch with Marilyn Angell who after a discussion of what I was looking for she sent me photos and videos of the dogs she thought would be suitable. I chose Dolly a 6 month GSD x who was rescued by Dora who runs the shelter and rescues all the dogs. After passing the homecheck the adoption papers were signed and the adoption fee paid. Marilyn sent papers informing me of the date times and drop off point near me to pick up Dolly and to take a slip lead to make sure that even though the dogs have collars on some of them can be overwelmed and scared so best to be safe. Dolly was prepared for travelling by Dora this included the passport, vaccinations, spaying, worming, defleaing and microchip. Travel4paws picked her up in their special dog van on the Tuesday and got to the UK on Thursday where Dolly spent 48hrs in Traces kennels for quarantine. On the Saturday a lot of people met the van at the specified drop off point to pick up their dogs and I got to meet the lovely Ann Pursey who does a lot of work for Amicii and Kelly Magee who fosters. Needless to say I cried when I saw Dolly who is the most loving and playfull girlie. Having been so impressed with Dora,Marilyn,Ann and the Amicii team 4 months later I adopted Gogu a 4 month old Romainian Shepherd who is the most calm gentle giant I have ever had. So please look at the beautiful dogs in the shelter who just need that someone to give them the love they deserve and adopting one or maybe 2 you will never regret it and you will make some lovely human friends on the way.

I can’t believe it hasn’t even been 2 months since Penny came, She has changed my life for the better and I can’t believe I was 4 years without a dog. Everybody loves her, and i hear total strangers commenting how sweet she is as we walk past. My sister’s big dog, who is quite unfriendly to other dogs, thinks she’s brilliant fun. So all good, thanks again for letting me adopt her, she’s amazing. Please also pass my thanks and best wishes to the people who looked after her in Romania, I know they must have cared for her very well for her to be so well socialised and happy.
Five Star Team!
Nice to hear from you and a nice thank-you, you and your team are five star, god bless you all
I’d just like to say thank you so much to everybody from Amicii, the whole process of adopting Milo was faultless, from finding him online to visiting him in foster care and collecting him, everybody involved was so helpful. The aftercare provided is second to none, and no question is too stupid to ask! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us find him, we couldn’t imagine life without our boy!
